Rakija as the elixir of life

The water of life, Firewater, the spirit of Spices – rakija has had many names and forms in the course of history, and it’s popular with a lot of cultures. Although inherently popular in the Southeast Europe, this wasn’t the only location where the glory of rakija was celebrated.

The first to create rakija were probably the Asians, who consumed fermented mare’s milk called kumiss, and through distillation they turned milk into rakija, otherwise known as karakumus.

In the 15th century, rakija was considered the elixir of life. Pharmacists and alchemists alike regarded rakija as a magic potion that elongated the life span.

However, its commercial use started around the 17th century, Louis XIV let vinegar makers produce rakija. Following this, rakija was a drink of choice for strong soldiers, and as the numbers of battles grew, so did the commercial demand for the brandy.

Today, the Katerina Velika rakija invigorates the palette on every occasion and evokes Macedonian tradition with every sip.
